The church at Callander was granted to Bishop Clement of Dunblane by Walter Comyn, earl of Menteith in 1238 and therefore the building of the church predates this. It was held by the bishops up to the Reformation. It was dedicated to St Kessog. The mound on which it was built was called Tom na Cheasaig (the Mound of St Kessog). This was dissolved in 1594 by James VI and it then became a Parish Church. The Parish of Kilmachog was united with Callander in 1620. There was a chapel at Little Ley known as Norrie's Chapel and it had the burial place of the Buchanans. Part of Leny Parish passed to Callander in 1615 with the remainder going to Port of Menteith and Kincardine Parishes.
The church was also used as a school up until 1773 when a new church was built in the township.
There is no trace of the original church and the area has been taken up by burial plots. There is sarcophagus for the Robertson family. There is also a watch-house dated 1832 which appears to have been designed by Duncan McNa, joiner. The builders were J Par; F Bu and D McGre (inscribed abbreviations).
