Former Eskdalemuir Church of Scotland

Eskdalemuir was part of Westerkirk Parish until 1703. As a result of this a church was built for the separate parish. A manse was erected in 1783. The church was replaced in 1826 probably on the same site but possibly moved from the graveyard site on the opposite side of the road. The architect was probably John Smallwood. The spire was replaced in 1853 by Walter Miller following a lightning strike. The church was renovated in 1908. The church was linked with Hutton & Corrie Church in 1962 and also with Tundergarth Church in 1982. It was then united with Langholm, Ewes and Westerkirk Churches sometime after 2000 and then Eskdalemuir Church was closed and sold.

It is rectangular in plan with a small belfry tower on the south gable. It is aligned anticlockwise of north/south with the tower in the south. The building has been roughcast and has a slated roof.

The tower has four stages and a stone spire. The pointed arch entrance is in the south face and has a fanlightabove the timber lintel. At stage two is a pointed arch window with Y-tracery. Stage three has a blind round-lobed quatrefoil. and stage four has a louvre pointed arch window with a hood moulding. The tower reduces in foot-print at each stage.

The side walls havethre stages with tall pointed arch windows with Y-tracery and two transoms.

The north gable has four pointed arch windows marching those onthe side.

A chamber organ was installed in 1907 by the Solway Positive Organ Co. A stained glass window was installed just after 1938 by J W R Cook and it depicts Christ and St Francis of Assisi.

The interior walls are plastered and painted above the panelling. The ceiling is suspended and is plastered and painted. There are two tiers of pews with side and central aisles. The gallery is semi-octagonal on cast iron colums and with panelled frontage.

The pulpit is tall with a sounding board and set on a splayed column. The communion table is newer and in a light coloured wood.
