This is the possible site of St Cuthbert's 8/9th century church. The church here was granted by Uchtred, son of Fergus, lord of Galloway to Holyrood Abbey in about 1170. It was dedicated to St Cuthbert. The church had daughter chapels at Kirkcudbright - St Andrew's and Kirkbride - St Bride's. There is also a well to St Margaret in Kirkcudbright. The church would appear to have been abandoned at the Reformation in about 1560 but the burial ground remained in use. There are the graves of three Covenanters -William Hunter, Robert Smith John Hall (Hallume) in the burial ground.
The first church was about 60 ft by 30 ft. There is no evidence for this 12th century building unless it was on the same foundation as the 8/9th century building
