A Free Church was formed in 1843 at Wanlockhead when the minister & most of congregation left the established church. They met in the open as they were not allowed a site to erect a church. In was not until 1851 that a wooden church was built. A manse was also built two years later. Because of the mining it appears that the church was closed and in 1859 a new church was build further east nearer the manse. This was Wanlockhead and Leadhills Free Church.
The building was a simple wooden box set back to the west off the main road to Sanquhar. It was aligned north west/south east.
