A Mission Station was formed in 1825 with a congregation forming in 1827. A building was erected in 1825. This was built as South Ronaldsay United Secession Church. The location has not beeen established but it was closer to Burray. A manse was built at St Margaret's Hope. The United Secession Church and the Relief Church united in 1847 and this church became South Ronaldsay United Presbyterian Church. A new church was built at St Margaret's Hope in 1854/56 next to the manse. As a result of this members from Burray left to form their own church. A schoolroom was added in 1858. In 1900 it became a South Ronaldsay North United Free Church at the union of the Free and United Presbyterian Churches. In 1929 at the union with the Church of Scotland it became South Ronaldsay St Margaret's Church. About this time lighting was installed in the church and manse and a bathroom was also installed in the manse. The church united with St Mary's and St Peter's Churches in 1959 as South Ronaldsay Church. St Mary's and St Peter's Churches had united in 1932 with both churches remaining in use. Burray Church was also linked to to South Ronaldsay Church in 1959 and this became a union in 1969 creating South Ronaldsay & Burray Church.
The building is aligned anticlockwise of north/south. It is T-plan with a Victorian birdcage bellcote on the north gable. It has pinnacle finials on the other gables and an entrance on the north gable. It is built in squared rubble and with slated roofs.
The north gable entrance has a flattened arch-head. The upper section is infilled in timber. To the sides are tall narrow round-headed windows and above a wider and shallower round-headed window.
The nave side walls have four bays with the southern thre having tall rectangular windows.
The transepts have tall rectangular windows on their north sides. The west gable has a slightly projecting pitched roof section for which the reason is not clear. The window detail here mirrors that on the north.
The south gable projects slightly beyond the south walls of the transepts and has a bull's eye ventilation window high up above the original school building. The latter has three bays and is domestic in style.
the east transept has windows on the north and south walls and on its gable only a single tall round-headed window.
There is a shallow north gallery. The pulpit was 19th century baroque.
